Throughout history, innocent people—especially women—have borne the brunt of oppression, violence, and systemic injustice worldwide. This series of photomontages focuses on the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement in Iran, from late winter 2022 to mid-spring 2023, highlighting the courage and resilience of young women confronting systemic oppression.
Following this movement, girls’ schools in Iran were subjected to chemical attacks for several months. I photographed one of these schools and merged these images with Peter Paul Rubens’ painting “Massacre of the Innocents”, which depicts a massacre of innocent people. The fusion of historical painting and contemporary photography illuminates the shared reality of violence and injustice against the innocent.
Through this work, these young girls claim their fundamental rights, including the right to oppose the mandatory wearing of the veil. By merging contemporary images with historical references, the project not only documents events but also becomes a visual inquiry into courage, resistance, and the relentless pursuit of freedom.
This work is both a testament and a call—to witness, empathize, and amplify the voices of those demanding their fundamental human rights.
